Why are my teeth not tracking with my Invisalign plan?
Straightening your teeth takes a lot of effort, time and money. Patients should monitor the movement of their teeth regularly. I find it not surprising that Invisalign patients complain about Invisalign not following their treatment plan. It can be frustrating to find that your Invisalign is not tracking. With extra effort and focused attention, we can help patients get back on track. In this blog I will share five reasons your Invisalign isn't tracking as expected and what you can do in order to get it back on track.
What is Clear Aligner tracking?
Before we dive into the tips, let's first review Invisalign and what "teeth tracking", so that you can better grasp the information I'm about. Tracking is a way to see how your teeth are moving in relation to your treatment plan. Although we cannot straighten your teeth in one go, we can train your teeth to move slowly and steadily. We continue this gradual process of training, moving, and moving again with every set of trays until you have a smile that is beautiful. Your treatment plan will be designed by an orthodontist who uses sophisticated software. Software creates a precise representation of your teeth's size, shape and position and then outlines how they will move in their new positions. We can make corrections mid-treatment or after treatment if Invisalign goes wrong. This will ensure that your smile is perfect. Hence, why is your tooth not tracking? These are just five reasons we can discuss in this blog. However, if you have any concerns about your progress, it is best to contact your provider or orthodontist.
My Invisalign is not tracking because of individual differences
To help you design your treatment plan, our computer models can run thousands of scenarios. Although they account for many common variables, these models cannot predict the individual differences in your body's response to orthodontic treatment. Plain and simple, some teeth are more stubborn than others, and when they aren't tracking it becomes one of the primary reasons why Invisalign provider doesn't work. Your lateral incisors, which are the small teeth that sit next to your front teeth, can be difficult to move with braces. Your provider might place Invisalign attachments on stubborn teeth to draw their attention and encourage them into following the plan. The buttons can be used to attach rubber bands to increase the force needed to move your teeth.
My Invisalign is not tracking because: Your teeth are colliding during treatment
You've probably experienced public transport during rush hour. It can be difficult for large crowds to squeeze through an open door. People eventually board the train after some bumping, grinding and shuffling. But not before they have had a chance to make contact with one another. Invisible braces may cause the same crowding effect, but on a smaller scale. Inter-proximal reduction is a method where two teeth collide with each other. These procedures are usually done in the office where your orthodontist can literally reshape you teeth to avoid collisions. But don't worry! IPR is an effective and safe way to make more space for your teeth so they can be straightened.
My Invisalign isn't tracking because: You aren’t wearing 22 hours per day
Many patients have difficulty adhering to the 22 hours recommended by Invisalign and other home clear aligner companies. It's difficult to find 22 hours a day to wear invisible braces. Ironically, the ability to remove trays within those two hours can cause your teeth to remain crooked even after Invisalign. This allows for refinements and mid-course corrections.
We recommend smart-phone app, which will help you reduce the variables caused by removing your tray and allow you to achieve the 22 hours of wear. It also keeps a record about your smile journey. You can set a limit on how many trays you allow to be out, and it has a timer that tracks the time that you are not wearing. You can also get a complete solution. This is a smart retainer case that you can use to track your daily wear.
My Invisalign is not tracking because: You're not doing your chewing exercises
Aligners create orthodontic tooth movement which guides your teeth into new positions. Your teeth are "pushed" by the trays when they are seated. This provides additional force to move your teeth. It is a numbers game. Every time you swallow, your teeth become more pronounced and your trays become tighter. Your trays get tightened every time you clench your teeth out of stress or determination. But, swallowing and clenching applies force only to your molars and not to the front teeth. Try to swallow. Where do you feel the pressure?
Invisalign experts recommend the following chewing exercises to apply pressure to your front teeth. All my patients should do them at least 3-5 times per day for 3-5 minutes each, with a particular focus on the front six teeth that aren't getting the same natural seating as their molars. You can also do chewing exercises to help your teeth move more easily. You can first use a chewie. These small foam tubes are used to bite into the aligners several times. Although they do the job well, they aren't very attractive in public. Use gentle pressure to get your aligners into place. This process will help you to achieve the results you want and keep you in line with your provider.
My Invisalign isn't tracking because: My trays have become gross and I don’t want them to be worn
They won't move your teeth if you don't wear them when they are required. If they are dirty and gross, you won't want to wear them. Many patients are very conscious of keeping their Invisalign braces clean. Clean trays will reduce the risk of cavities and keep your breath from getting stale. Clear trays will be easier to see and are less likely to get stained with eggshell or ecru. We have a whole blog about keeping clear aligners clean and visible. But there is one thing we want to emphasize that will help prevent tracking problems. This will reduce the tensile strength of your trays and eventually cause them to warp. Even if it doesn't seem like this, even small, imperceptible changes can cause everything to go out of control.
Keep positive!
The smile journey is a journey. Even with the most advanced technology and 3D printed trays; there are always things that go wrong. While it might take some extra time for your treatment, it is worth the effort to achieve the smile you desire. It's an exciting time to start your clear aligner treatment!
